Mistakes and checklists
Whole-home remodel preparation mistakes to avoid
A remodel's hardest problems usually trace back to preparation: scope that was never written down, selections made too late, or no plan for where the household lives. Each mistake below links to the guide that goes deeper.
What matters
Write the scope down
A written scope is what bids, drawings and change orders are measured against.
Decide early, order early
Late selections delay long-lead items and invite change orders.
Plan the household, not just the house
Where people sleep, cook and work during construction affects scope, phasing and schedule.

How to decide
Before you rely on a checklist
- Each prevention step names a document you can ask for or keep; it is not a contract term.
- Where a step involves California contract rules, the change-order guide cites the current CSLB source.
Hypothetical: an owner picks the lowest of three remodel bids, then finds tile and fixtures were low allowances and permit fees were excluded. A four-answer comparison matrix would have shown the gap before signing.
Questions
- Which guide should I read first?
- Start with whole-home remodel planning, then scope comparison before you request bids.

Educational, not a service offer
These pages explain decisions in general. Service pages by community describe KB's work in a specific place; permit pages describe each authority. Nothing here confirms what applies to your parcel.
