01
The assembly, not just the finish
Distinguish the named stucco system, supporting substrate and water-management layers. Ask the designer to show how the selected water-resistive barrier, flashing and drainage provisions connect at openings and terminations. A decorative coating is not evidence of a complete drainage plane. Cement plaster, proprietary assemblies and existing walls need their own specifications; this guide establishes no universal layer count or gap dimension.

Ownership and maintenance
Inspect accessible terminations and interfaces, not only surface color. Recoating can conceal symptoms without resolving an underlying leak. Establish whether cracking is finish-related, substrate-related or an issue needing professional assessment before selecting a patch. Follow the named finish’s compatible cleaning and repair method.
03
What the proposal must include
Ask bids to separate removal, substrate repair, water-management work, reinforcement/system components, finish, scaffolding and window/roof interfaces. A patch area price cannot represent a full-wall remediation scope. Include protection of landscaping and public access where relevant, subject to actual site review.
04
Resolve before procurement
Approve the wall sections and a texture/color sample before production. Coordinate opening replacements with the wall work so flashing continuity is not left to an unnamed later trade. Obtain current system instructions and local review; no do-it-yourself assembly is prescribed.
