Design story

A two-story hillside house of board-formed concrete, dark bronze and warm timber, stepping down through terraced gardens toward a reflecting pool.

ORION is imagined for sloping ground. Instead of levelling the hill, the concept steps with it, letting two long floors cantilever and settle into a sequence of terraced gardens.

Board-formed concrete carries the grain of its timber moulds, a quiet record of how it was made. Dark bronze frames wide glazing, while warm timber soffits glow overhead from inside and out.

A reflecting, infinity-style pool is envisioned to extend the lowest terrace toward the distant hills — a composition about horizon and stillness, not about any particular parcel or view.

Intended material palette

  1. 01

    Board-formed concrete

Timber-grained mass that anchors the slope.

  2. 02

    Dark bronze

Deep, quiet frames for wide glazing.

  3. 03

    Warm timber soffits

Glowing undersides that read from inside and out.

  4. 04

    Terraced planting

Stepped gardens that follow the hill.

Conceptual highlights

  • Stepping with the slope

Two long floors that settle into terraces.

  • Wide glazing

Bronze-framed openings oriented toward the horizon.

  • Reflecting pool

Still water envisioned at the lowest terrace.

  • Honest materials

Concrete, bronze and timber left legible.

Questions this design study raises

A concept does not answer whether it can be built on a particular lot. These are the questions to resolve first; they are not conclusions.
