Design story

An elegant townhouse for a coastal city street: warm stucco over a pale limestone base, cedar screens and an intimate rooftop terrace.

SORA is a vertical house. Where an estate spreads out, this concept stacks daily life vertically, with arrival and gathering near the street, private rest above, and an open sky terrace at the top.

Warm off-white stucco rests on a pale limestone base that meets the sidewalk. Slender vertical cedar screens filter light and privacy, softening the facade as the sun moves along the street.

Recessed balconies give each level a sheltered outdoor edge, a planted entry offers a moment of green before the front door, and the rooftop terrace is imagined as the household's quiet retreat.

Grounds the house where it meets the street.

  3. 03

    Vertical cedar screens

    Filtered privacy that weathers gracefully.

  4. 04

Green at the entry and on the roof.

  • Recessed balconies

Sheltered outdoor edges on each level.

  • Rooftop terrace

An intimate open-air room envisioned above the street.

Questions this design study raises

A concept does not answer whether it can be built on a particular lot. These are the questions to resolve first; they are not conclusions.

Buildability

On a narrow urban lot, where do planted terraces drain, and what structure carries soil weight on the roof?

Architect and builder coordination →
Maintenance

Cedar screens weather by design; who re-treats or replaces boards, and how are they reached?

Specification

Which stucco system and color hold up to coastal air while staying matte?
